What is the best rubber for a mechanical seal?

The product we all refer to as rubber, takes many different forms. Originally rubber came from a tree, most rubber or “Elastomers” these days are man-made. The most common elastomer (rubber) used on a mechanical seal is Nitrile (also called Buna-N). The reason is simple, Nitrile is compatible with both water and oil.  But Nitrile has it’s limitations.  As fuels gained additives, the additives attacked the seals in your car, so most automotive fuel systems are FKM or Viton.  The key is to use an elastomer in your mechanical seal that is compatible with the fluid being pumped.  Neoprene does well in cold applications. Viton (FKM) does well in applications over 300 F – 500 F. Consult your American Seal  & Packing representative for specific recommendations.
