Valve Packings
While some packings can be used in both pumps and valves, many are not interchangable. The more suited to the application, the longer it will last!
Valve Packings
Pack it so it lasts
The most common reason a valve leaks is due to using a poor quality packing. Many original equipment manufacturers supply the least expensive, general service packing for their valves. Many users make the mistake of replacing that poor quality packing with an identical poor-quality packing. Stop the vicious cycle of repair, allow us to help you get a packing that will last far longer, and seal tighter. We can help you conform to the latest API and AQMD minimal leakage requirements using the best available technology. We may even save you money.
Flexible Graphite Packing
Flexible Graphite is the base material in the most effective sealing products. Because flexible graphite is very malleable, it will conform to irregularities that cause leak paths. Sealing them tight.
We offer multiple styles that are primarily made up of flexible graphite. Some have another yarn such as carbon yarn for pressure resistance and to act a a wiper to keep contaminants from getting into the graphite.
Graphite packings specifically designed for valve service will have Inconel wire. Some styles have minimal wire while others will have each yarn wrapped with an Inconel wire mesh.
To meet stringent API fugitive emissions requirements, we offer multiple brands.
Graphite Valve Stem Packings and Packing Sets
Anti-extrusion
Carbon end rings coated with PTFE or graphite prive to be superior end rings or “Bull Rings”.
Pressure resistant
Inconel wire is added in mutiple styles, as the percentage of wire increases so does the pressure resistance.

Specialty Packings for problem applications
Not all applications are created equal. The most common cause of packing failure are:
- Compatibility Issues
- Temperature limitations
- Abrasive media

Valve Packing Sets
Flexible Graphite Combination Valve Packing Set
Short Stack Graphite Valve Packing Set
Standard Graphite/Packing Valve Packing Set
A wide range of packings. Like our mechanical seal offerings, we are not restricted to one brand USA made or import. We offer your favorites and have various styles of private branded packing for us. We have delivered Garlock, John Crane, and Chesterton to our customers, that had engineering callouts to meet.
There is no sealing device more expensive than a cheap one.
We are unique. Most distributors are tied to one major line and promote only that line. We offer multiple lines because no one sealing company is good at, or most cost effective in all the product segments they offer. Let us help you get the most for your money.
Combination Sets
Seals SpecialistsAS&P provides combination sets of packing. Examples of this would be our 698 or 649 Carbon end rings combined with die-formed flexible graphite rings in cup and cone, square or rectangular shapes. These sets are common in OEM valve sets designed for high temperature and low emission applications. Rockwell Valve did extensive testing on these flexible graphite sets and concluded they could last the life of the valve.
VALVE PACKING
Are valve and pump packings interchangeable?
Some packing styles can be used in both valves and pumps, but never assume this is always the case or you may wind up with scored pump shafts. Generally, all pump packings can be used in a valve, depending on the service. The opposite is not true. Because valves often function at higher pressures, they may have wire reinforcement to help prevent extrusion of the packing. If a packing containing wire is placed against a pump shaft, you can expect it to score the shafts causing wear and creating a leak path, not to mention an added expense to replace the pump shaft sleeve.
