John Crane originally developed this style of seal over 50 years ago and it has been an industry-standard ever since. We call our version a 1E but the fundamental design is the same. Through the development of a rubber boot to seal the shaft and having a seal head sit on top of the spring, this seal design seals well and lasts long in a wide range of applications.
There are two ways to produce the seal head, either machined on a CNC or stamp them from sheet metal to form the body. There are advantages to each method. A machined head will be more durable and repairable. Stamped seal heads are often not repairable (especially in small sizes. Stamped versions are the most common inexpensive and effective. Our seals are not made by John Crane or US Seal Manufacturing (we can offer them if you prefer either brand).

Available in either stamped stainless steel or machined from bar stock, this seal is a workhorse and one of the most common in the world.

By adding a gland and a sleeve, this durable seal with it’s difficult to clog design make a great inexpensive slurry seal.

Stationary Seats
Selecting the style of the seal is only half the battle. Choosing the right seal face materials and the type of seat can make the difference of a seal that lasts for days or decades.
There are many materials seal seats can be made from but these are the most common:

Mechanical Seals
The most common question we get is what should i use, Pump Packing or a Mechanical Seal?
Packing is excellent in a wide range of applications. The factors to consider are is leakage acceptable, and what cost target are you trying to stay under in the short term and long term. Mechanical seals are generally more expensive initially. However the longer you keep your pump in service, the more cost effective a mechanical seal can be. Most packings must leak an average of 6 drops per minute (with the exception of flexible graphite), to lubricate the shaft.
