Gasket Material
We offer most major brands and some you have not heard of. All of our selected lines are top shelf quality, nothing gets through our door without a quality check.
Our slogan is that there is nothing more expensive than a cheap seal, and it truly applies to gasket material. Too often the gasket material that was chosen based on price is the one that’s leaking on your floor. Our roots are in sheet gasket materials. Our founder comes from a background with Durlon and Garlock, and has toured most gasket manufacturing operations in the United States and a few in Europe. This guide is based on the best sealing practices seen and developed over the last 40 years in the industry.
FAQ
How do I select a Gasket Material?
What gasket material brands are best?
No Branded brands are always superior. There are plenty of bargain unbranded gasket materials out there. It never makes sense to skimp on the most vulnerable part of your equipment.
We can tell you which gasket material is the best selection for your application. Each product segment has its industry leader, usually the first brand to make that particular type, but also the most expensive. It pays to be open to quality alternatives. We can provide you with gasket material options.
What is the easiest way to know which gasket material is best?
The first thing to consider is, does the manufacturer brand their product? In today’s market, there is a lot of foreign-made inferior sheets that are usually unbranded. Most unbranded sheets were sold to the gasket cutter based on price. There are exceptions and some OEM’s do prefer an unbranded or privately branded gasket material.
What information do I need to select the right material?
We usually start with the temperature. There 5 classes of material: cryogenic, 32-225 F, 226 – 500 F, 501F to 850 F and above 850F (high-temperature gaskets). Material temperature ranges can be narrowed to these 5. By narrowing the materials it helps us to hone into the ideal solution.
We consider Pressure, Application, the Media being sealed, Size, and (if a dynamic application) speed.
Is there a universal gasket material ?
The closest thing to a universal material would be Flexible Graphite, or Expanded PTFE simply because they both have a 0-14ph range. So they are both compatible with most materials. Sulfuric and Nucleic acids are a problem for graphite. In PTFE or Teflon, Fluorine based chemicals can be the problem. So, approx 95% of the applications below 850 F can be handled with PTFE or Flexible Graphite.
What Gasket brands do you carry or cut?
We can cut Durlon, Garlock, Teadit, Thermoseal, Klinger, Frenzlit, Viton, Aflas, Grafoil, Sepco, Utex, Leader, JM Clipper, and many more.
What materials do you carry or cut?
We cut most rubbers, silicones, PTFE, non-asbestos, mica, FKM, NBR, SBR, EPDM, and Cork.
What equipment do you cut gaskets with?
The method of cutting depends on the quantity being cut and the tolerances required. Old fashion clicker presses are still the most efficient way to cut high volumes. A knife edge CNC allows us to cut without requiring the cost and delay of having a die made. We also cut with a laser for ideal materials like PTFE.
Non-Asbestos Gasket Material is another specialty for AS&P. We supply our own AS&P brand as well as other popular brands including; Durlon, Thermoseal, Garlock, Sepco, Utex, FMI and Teadit.
Spiral Wound Gaskets is another specialty for AS&P. High-pressure applications require high-pressure gaskets. We distribute Durlon, Leader, AS&P, and FMI brand spiral wound gaskets.

For Chemical, Clean or FDA applications PTFE , Expanded PTFE and Filled PTFE are commonly used gasket materials. PTFE is a hard plastic and requires enough load to maintain a seal. Expanded PTFE seals quickly with little load, which is why it is used on glass lined pipe. Filled PTFE (HS10 or Skived) materials have far superior cold flow characteristics.

The most common high-temperature gasket solution is Flexible Graphite Material. We offer the 3 most common variations, Homogeneous, Foil and Tang inserts. Each with their own purpose. Flexible graphite seals better than any other material, but it does have its limits. Two limiting factors that must be considered are; does the application require a “clean” material and is there oxygen present? If there is oxygen present and the temperature is over 950 F, see the micatherm material below. Flexible graphite can handle up to 5,400 F if there is no oxygen present, making it one of the safest and most reliable high-temperature gasket materials on the market.

Of course not all gasket applications are difficult. Some just need an elastomer that is compatible with the liquid or gas being sealed. Elastomeric gasket materials have the advantage of having 100% recovery after compression. In thermodynamic, or just dynamic applications recovery is the difference between maintaining a seal, and suffering a leak. To find the right material for your application, start with the temperature rating, and then check the chemical compatibility. If the application is outdoors (or sees ozone) consider ozone resistant materials like EPDM and silicone.
