Hard faces refer to the hardness of the seal face.  The materials in seal faces are generally Carbon, Ceramic, Ni-resist, 17-4 SS, Brass, Bronze, Aluminum Bronze, Glass Filled PTFE, Silicon Carbide, or Tungsten Carbide.  By far the hardest of these are Silicon and Tungsten, each having their own advantages. If your pump is in abrasive service your soft seal faces are vulnerable. We recommend using “hard faces” and getting 5 – 20 times the life out of your mechanical seal.
