If a seal spring is too long, how far can I compress it?
Most single spring seals are designed to have a 50% compression rate. So if the spring has to be compressed more to fit inside your pump will it work? In our experience, the answer is a qualified yes. Over compressing the spring will create an increased force on the seal face resulting in premature failure. It’s a question of degrees as to if that is a problem. A water pump seal can often run for 20 years, so if a 50% reduction in life to 10 years is a judgment call that only can be made by the pump owner.
