The best seal face for your application depends on your objective; low cost, long life,  abrasive resistance, or chemical resistance.  Most pump manufacturers will provide either Ceramic Vs. Carbon or Ni-resist (or 17-4 SS) Vs. Carbon simply because they do a good job in water service. If your objective is abrasion resistance the best materials are Tungsten Carbide and Silicon Carbide which uniquely can run against themselves (with different lap finishes) or each other. For extreme chemical services glass-filled PTFE (GFPTFE) Vs. Carbon faces are a good choice.  There are multiple other possibilities, but these will cover 98% of the applications out there.
