When a seal runs dry the seal faces generate heat. We have seen swimming pool seals that overheated because the pump lost its prime causing the seals to run dry. The result was the water in the pump got hot enough to deform the plastic filter basket in the pump.  Nothing kills pump seals more often than pumps running dry or not being primed prior to start-up.
