There are multiple things to consider and they are all application related.  How hot or cold is the application? Are there chemicals present? Are there extremes in pressure? Are you pumping something abrasive such as mud, sand, calcium, silt, etc? And to what degree of temperature, abrasiveness, or pressure do you need to contend with.  Mechanical seals will last a long time if the right materials are used in the mechanical seal build.
