Some applications where minimal leakage was acceptable are no longer acceptable. In an application where contamination of the environment is no longer tolerated, a double seal can be helpful. By adding a seal head to each end of the single spring, and a stationary to contact each head, you double the protection. That protection can be from oil or chemicals from field contamination or simply reduce expensive water loss.
